Taxi and minibus drivers have aired concerns about cruise ship passengers facing lengthy waits for public transportation in Dockyard.

It is claimed some visitors are left out of pocket because they buy public transport tickets, but then get fed up waiting and end up paying again for private transportation.

The West End Development Corporation says it is attempting to deal with large numbers of passengers.

Yesterday, long lines of tourists could be seen waiting for buses.

One taxi driver said: “There are all of these taxis and minibuses that take them but they have already bought their tickets and have to wait for the public transportation even if it means waiting for long periods of time.

“A lot of these people can be transported by us to increase the traffic flow and make people’s holidays easier. When people go on vacation they want to do things instead of waiting in these long lines. It’s hectic and something needs to change.”

A minibus driver said: “They end up doubling up on their transportation fare because they have already paid for tickets from the ship which can end up making them angry.”

Wedco general manager Andrew Dias said: “There is always going to be a short wait, no matter what transportation method is being used. A large number of tourists do not have pre-arranged transportation and you cannot plan for everyone to go to certain places.

“There will always be some delays, but the most important thing is that we provide various other options for those who do not wish to wait. In general, it’s not perfect but everybody is working the best they can in order to make sure that everything is running as smoothly as possible.”
