Follow us for regular updates from the action on the first day of the NatWest Island Games in Jersey, as Chris Estwanik grabs the Island’s first gold medal in the men’s half marathon.

4pm: That’s it for our live coverage for the first day of the Island Games in Jersey. It’s been an up and down day for Bermuda’s athletes and there’s plenty more to come over the next several days.

See tomorrow’s sport section for a wrap-up of all today’s action and we’ll be back here tomorrow with more from Jersey, including following Taahira Butterfield and Natasha Trott in their 100m final, which is due to begin around 2.30pm Bermuda time.

3.40pm Bermuda’s womens volleyball team defeated Jersey 3-1 in group stage action.

3.20pm Taahira Butterfield and Natasha Trott both finished first in their heats as the women’s 100m event gets under way. Trott finished with a time of 12.42sec and Butterfield with a time of 12.45sec, finishing with the fastest two times in all three heats. Both qualify for the final tomorrow.

Bermuda’s badminton team have lost 4-1 to Isle of Man. They will be in action again tomorrow playing in the consolation bracket.

3.15pm: Bermuda lost their quarter-final match-up against Guernsey in the men’s tennis team event after David Thomas lost to Rob West in singles 6-2, 4-6, 0-1.

3pm: In men’s basketball, Bermuda defeated Guernsey 67-54 in their opening match of the group stage.

2.30pm: Isle of Man have levelled things in the badminton group match with Bermuda. Jessica Li beat Emma Calow 21-19, 21-10 in the women’s singles. The three doubles matches are next.

In the indoor volleyball, Bermuda have taken the third set 25-17 against Jersey and are 2-1 up in their opening match of the Games.

2pm: Bermuda’s women struggled in their last beach volleyball game of the day, losing 21-7, 21-7 to Menorca. In the badminton, Bermuda have taken the men’s singles rubber against Isle of Man, with Michael Palmer beating Adam Colley 11-21, 21-17, 22-20. The team that wins that encounter will be in the semi-finals.

In the men’s tennis, Bermuda are trailing Guernsey in their quarter-final match-up after Gavin Manders lost the opening singles 1-6, 3-6 to Patrick Ogier.

1.30pm: Kallin Hillier has moved into first place in the overall standings in the Laser Standard sailing event. Hillier finished fourth in the fourth race of the day, and now has a two point lead at the top of the standings, with 14 points, Mans Lundberg, of Aland is second, with Dominic Breen-Turner, from Anglesey third on 18 points.

1pm: Bermuda’s men have beaten Isle of Man in their second beach volleyball game of the day, winning 21-9, 21-10. Bermuda women are up next against Menorca.

12.30pm: Bermuda have beaten Shetland Islands 4-1 in their Group C badminton match. A mixed doubles win for Rowena Cespedes and Danial Hughes takes the team into their final group game against Isle of Man, who beat Shetland by the same score, with a semi-final place at stake.

12pm: Bermuda’s men have lost their first beach volleyball match against Cayman Island 21-12, 21-11.

The triathlon is also about to start, and Bermuda have Tucker Murphy and Travis Cooper competing in the men’s race and Martina Olcheski-Bell and Belinda Castree in the women’s event.

11.40am: Bermuda are 3-1 up in their badminton match against Shetland Islands. Rohan Pai and Emma Calow both won their singles matches, before Pai and Michael Palmer added a victory in the men’s doubles. Calow and Rowena Cespedes lost in the women’s doubles.

In the windsurfing, David Kendall finished third in the third race of the day and is presently fifth in the overall standings. Team-mate Scott Mello is eighth with Matthew Wilken in 15th and Alexander Jones 16th.

10.45am: Time for a quick recap for those who are just joining us.

Chris Estwanik got things started with a bang first thing this morning, winning gold in the men’s half marathon in 1hr 07min 16 sec, beating pre-race favourite Lee Merrien by more than 30 seconds. In the women’s race, Deon Breary was Bermuda’s top finisher, coming in tenth.

In the tennis, Bermuda are through to the quarter-finals of the men’s team event where they will play Guernsey after beating Faroe Islands 2-1 in their opening round.

Bermuda’s women pushed Gotland close, but ultimately lost their first beach volleyball match, 21-11, 21-17.

The cyclists have been out on the road in the time trial, with the women’s event won by Kim Ashton, of Jersey, who took gold in 55:08, and Torquil Vehye, from Faroe Islands, won the men’s race in 47:56.

On the water Kallin Hillier is third in the overall standings for the Laser Standard event, while Bermuda’s windsurfers are competing in the individual competition.

10.20am: Bermuda have made it into the quarter-finals of the men’s tennis with a 2-1 win over Faroe Islands. All-square going into the deciding rubber, Gavin Manders and David Thomas beat Pætur Dahl and Nicholas Petersson 6-3, 6-3.

Meanwhile, Bermuda’s result against Gotland in the women’s beach volleyball was 21-11, 21-17 to Gotland. Bermuda led for part of the second set, but in the end Gotland proved too strong. “Very proud, good top match, shaky first set,” Tove Wahlem, of Gotland, said.

10am: Kallin Hillier is holding on to second place overall in the Laser Standard sailing, with two third-place finishes and a fourth place so far this morning. David Hillier is 17th overall after finishing, 17th, 8th and 20th in his three outings.

In the beach volleyball, Lisa LaBlanc and Rebecca White have lost their opening match against Gotland, while the men’s tennis rubber against Faroe Islands is going down to the wire with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

9.20am: David Kendall has finished fourth in the first race in the individual windsurfing event this morning, team-mates Scott Mello, Matthew Wilken and Alexander Jones were eighth, fifteenth and sixteenth respectively.

Elsewhere, Torquil Vehye, from the Faroe Islands, has won the men’s road time trial in 47:56.

9am: Bermuda’s beach volleyball and badminton teams are about to begin their Games. In the beach volleyball Bermuda’s women are taking on Gotland, while in badminton, Bermuda’s first game is against Shetland Islands.

8.40am: Bermuda level at 1-1 with Faroe Islands in team tennis after David Thomas beats Pætur M. Dahl 6-1, 6-4 at Caesarean Tennis Club.

Kallin Hillier grabs his second, third-placed finish of the morning in the Laser Standard sailing event. Hillier is second in the standings after two races, David Hillier is twelfth after finishing eighth in his second race.

8.30am: Still waiting on news of Bermuda’s female cyclists in this morning’s time trial, although the top three have been confirmed. Kim Ashton took gold in 55:08, 11 seconds ahead of Liz Holden from the Isle of Man, and more than two minutes ahead of Shetland’s Christine McLean who won bronze.

Ashton won a silver and bronze medal in the cycling in Bermuda two years ago.

8.10am: Bermuda are in a hole in their opening encounter of the men’s tennis against Faroe Islands. Gavin Manders lost the first match 6-3, 7-5 to Nicholas Petersson. In the cycling, all the competitors are out on the course in the men’s time trial and it’s just a case of waiting to see what happens. Dominique Mayho, Darren Glasford, Che’quan Richardson and Deshi Smith are all taking part this morning.

8am: Confirmation that Bermuda’s Kalin Hillier was third in the first race of the Laser Standard sailing event, with Alan’s Niklas Areschoug finishing first, and his countryman Mans Lundberg second. David Hillier was 17th.

Interesting story in the tennis, meanwhile, where Cayman Islands will be without their top player after he was refused permission to leave because his passport had expired.

Illian Nachev got to the airport in Cayman only to be turned back.

“He called the coach and told him and the coach called me and all the words out of my mouth were beep beep beep.,” Edmund Junior Hydes, the Cayman tennis team manager, said. “We brought a lot of juniors as well so the team is going to be weakened without him.”

7.40am: As you might have noticed there’s now a video attached to our morning updates. You might not be able to be in Jersey, but that does not mean you can’t watch Chris Estwanik win Bermuda’s first gold of the 2015 NatWest Island Games.

7.20am: It looks like the Bermuda team of David and Kalin Hillier have finished third in the Laser Standard race this morning, but we’ll bring you official confirmation of that when we get it. Still waiting for the times for the women’s time trial, and the men have just started their event.

The results from the team half marathon are also in, Estwanik and Wilson finished fifth in the men’s event, with Breary, Hoey, and Fiddick sixth in the women’s team race.

7am: Bermuda men are beginning their first beach volleyball match of the Games, they take on Saaremaa now, with a second match against Rhodes to follow at 11am Bermuda time. The women, meanwhile, will open against hosts Jersey in a little less than two hours, with a match against Rhodes to follow.

6.40am: Officials times for the men’s and women’s half marathons are in.

Chris Estwanik won the men’s race in a time of 1hr 07min 16sec, with Lee Merrien second in 1:07:51, and Kevin Loundes of the Isle of Man third in 1:08:41. Bermuda’s Ryan Wilson finished 25th in 1:23:26.

Kim Baglietto of Gibraltar took the women’s gold in 1:21:35, ahead of Hannah Howard of Isle of Man in 1:22:45. Deon Breary came first among the Bermuda contingent finishing tenth overall in 1:28:46, with Rose-Ann Hoey 13th in 1:30:55, and Victoria Fiddick 15th in 1:32:32.

6.30am: Kim Ashton of Jersey wins Women’s Time Trial in 55:08, waiting for official word on final placings for Bermuda’s Gabriela Arnold, Karen Bordage and Zoenique Williams.

6:20am: What a start, and that’s just the beginning of a hectic day of sport in Jersey. Up next for Bermuda’s athletes are the cycling, shooting and tennis events. In the cycling the women’s road time trial is already under way, as is the men’s team event in the tennis. The shooting competition this morning is the Automatic Ball Trap.

6am: What a way to start, Estwanik wins gold in the men’s half marathon, beating Lee Merrien of Guernsey, who was second. Guernsey did take gold in the team event, with Kim Baglietto of Gibraltar winning the women’s half marathon.

5.40am: With 2 miles to go Estwanik has taken the lead in the half marathon and is 50m ahead of Lee Merrien, it’s going to be a close one.

5.20am: Lee Merrien, the Guernsey competitor, leads the half marathon at the seven-mile mark. He and Chris Estwanik were neck and neck for the first five miles, but the Olympian has now opened up a lead on the Bermuda runner. Ryan Wilson is also competing in the half marathon as Bermuda chase a medal in the team event as well.

Bermuda’s women are also chasing medals in their half marathon with Deon Breary, Rose-Anna Hoey, and Victoria Fiddick all in the field.

Morning all, it’s going to be a busy day for Bermuda’s athletes today, there is the half marathon, cycling, basketball, beach volleyball, sailing, triathlon, badminton and tennis all happening at some point.

Chris Estwanik and the runners have kicked things off this morning, and the six-times May 24th winner could provide Bermuda with their first medal of the games early.
