Player behaviour at heart of BFA inquiry

No complaints: Keishen Bean, the Bermuda captain, congratulates a Guatemala player at the National Stadium

The Bermuda Football Association will begin its World Cup qualifying postmortem after revealing that the team’s preparations for this month’s home match against Guatemala were troubled by accommodation problems and players misbehaving.

It has been revealed that head coach Andrew Bascome left the team hotel on the morning of the second-round match after it emerged some players had been entertaining women in their hotel rooms.

Bascome later rejoined the team at the National Stadium ahead of their 1-0 defeat to Guatemala, which resulted in their elimination from the tournament, having drawn 0-0 in the first leg three days earlier.

The squad returned to Bermuda from Guatemala on the Saturday night, heading straight from the airport to an unnamed hotel, where they remained until the Monday afternoon to avoid any outside distractions.

However, it has come to light that besides the issues with player conduct, the hotel did not have sufficient space to accommodate the squad, with extra beds being placed in two rooms, while some coaches had to give up their rooms for players.

The BFA has also said there were problems with the food service, with the pre-match meal at the hotel being cancelled with alternative arrangements being made at a restaurant in Hamilton.

“This week has been set aside for a postmortem of the entire World Cup campaign, where we will be discussing the positives and negatives of the series of matches with a view of establishing ways for improvements.” read the BFA statement.

“Additionally, we will be addressing the conduct of the few players. The BFA became aware of issues of the conduct of a few players who had females in their rooms on Monday in breach of the expected conduct.

“As a result of that, the coach [Bascome] who had earlier given up his room to players, did leave the hotel early in order to consider how to deal with the issue after which he did join the team at the NSC.

“We are committed to ensuring the long-term goals for the current generation of the senior team are met.”

The BFA has called for the players to “reflect on their individual commitment and dedication to Bermuda”, while thanking the coaching staff and fans for their support.

“We are confident that all the players, including the professional ones, will reflect on their individual commitment and dedication to Bermuda, to playing for Bermuda and representing their local clubs that invested so much into them. We thank our players and coaching staff. Also, we extend our sincere thanks to the people of Bermuda for all their support during the recent campaign.

“We are deeply upset that Bermuda did not advance to the next round. We are grateful to all the players who gave their utmost to playing for Bermuda.”

Bermuda advanced to the second round of the qualifiers after defeating Bahamas 8-0 on aggregate in March.
