Live: Island Games - Day 2

Follow us for regular updates from the action on the second day of the NatWest Island Games in Jersey.

5pm: That’s it for our coverage of the second day of the Island Games in Jersey. Bermuda’s athletics team shone, adding three more medals to Bermuda’s total with a gold and two silvers.

Check back tomorrow as Bermuda’s golfers will be in action early, and Bermuda’s basketball team will square off against Gotland starting at 9am Bermuda time with more from cycling, sailing, and others to come.

4.50pm: Official times for the men’s 5,000m: Harvey Dixon of Gibraltar in first with a time of 14min 29.47sec. Chris Estwanik was right on his heels, finishing in 14:30.84. Lamont Marshall came in fifth with a time of 15:15.02.

4.30pm: Chris Estwanik took silver in the 5,000m, setting the pace for much of the race and losing to Gibraltar runner Harvey Dixon in the final sprint. Lamont Marshall turned in a good showing as well, finishing in fifth place.

4.10pm: Wrapping up a few more results from today as the action winds down in Jersey. Bermuda sit at 12th on the medal table with two golds and a silver:

Kalin Hillier remains in first place in the Laser Standard sailing event with five races to go. David Hillier is in 17th.

Hereward Peter Dill is in 11th in the Laser Radial event, with Stephen O’Reilly holding at 20th.

Their combined finishes put Bermuda in fifth overall in the sailing team event.

Deshi Smith finished 31st in the men’s Individual Cross Country Mountain Bike final with a time of 1hr 57min 37sec.

3.15pm: Taahira Butterfield finished in 12.24sec and Natasha Trott in 12.32sec in their one-two victory in the women’s 100m final. Faye Cox of the Shetland Islands finished third in 12.39sec.

3.00pm: Bermuda break back into the medal table with a gold and silver in the women’s 100m from Taahira Butterfield and Natasha Trott. You can watch the race here.

2.45pm: Bermuda’s basketball team put the finishing touches on their 81-49 win over Isle of Wight. They take on Gotland tomorrow.

Hereward Peter Dill dropped to 11th overall in the Laser Radial sailing event. Stephn O’Reilly is in 20th.

David Kendell is in sixth after five races in the sailboarding final, with Scott Mello 14th, Matthew Wilken 15th, and Alexander Jones 16th.

Up next are Natasha Trott and Taahira Butterfield with medal chances in the women’s 100m final.

2.30pm: Bermuda’s basketball team is up 64-30 against Isle of Wight at the end of the third quarter.

The men’s volleyball squad took down Shetland Islands 25-18, 25-12, 25-21 for the 3-0 sweep.

2pm: Bermuda’s women lost to Saaremaa 21-17, 21-14 in their beach volleyball match.

Bernard Wade III finished seventh overall in the Single FITA Men’s Recurve archery final. Robert O’Conner came in 32nd.

1.50pm: At the half, Bermuda are up 42-21 against Isle of Man in basketball.

1.30pm: Team Bermuda have a commanding 28-10 lead over Isle of Man after the first quarter of basketball action.

1.15pm: Several results just in:

Bermuda’s beach volleyball men defeated Faroe in a hard-fought 2-1 victory in front of a large crowd. Scores were 21-12, 18-21, 13-15.

Bermuda’s badminton team lost to Greenland in their battle for fifth place. The final score was 4-0.

On the water, a tough 17th place finish for Hereward Peter Dill in the third race of the Laser Radial sailing event dropped him from third to eighth overall for the day. Dill and Stephen O’Reilly, 20th, will have plenty of time to climb back up the standings with six more races scheduled throughout the week.

Bermuda’s basketball team is in action continuing their gold medal defence against a strong Isle of Wight team.

12.40pm: Chris Weekes lost to Filip Engstrom of Gotland in the men’s tennis singles round of 64 3-6, 5-7. Jack Keyes, Gavin Manders, and David Thomas all received byes through to the next round.

12pm: Bermuda’s cyclist Sarah Bonett finished just outside of the podium today in the women’s Mountain Bike Cross Country final, coming in fourth place.

Bernard Wade III of Bermuda is in seventh in the Single FITA Men’s Recurve archery final with one round still to go. Robert O’Connor is in 34th.

The Laser Radial sailing event has started after being delayed due to fog, with Hereward Peter Dill and Stephen O’Reilly of Bermuda in action throughout the day.

11.40am: Some shooting results in from this morning: Bermuda’s shooting team trails in sixth place after the first round of the Fullbore Queens final. Nelson Chesterfield Simons is in 12th after the first round of the solo Fullbore Queens final with two rounds still to go.

Raymond Beaulne and Kevin Constable finished last in the Automatic Ball Trap Team final.

Terence Madeiros and J. Andrew Pereira came 10th of 12 teams in the English Skeet Team final.

11.15am: A tough start so far for our women’s volleyball teams with the indoor group losing to Aland 3-1 and the beach pair falling 2-1 to hosts Jersey.

8.30am: It’s been a quiet morning in Jersey for Bermuda so far on the second day of the NatWest Island Games.

The Badminton team have narrowly beaten Gibraltar 3-2 in their play-off match.

James Linares got Gibraltar off to a good start with a 21-9, 23-21 win over Michael Palmer in the men’s singles.

Emma Calow drew Bermuda level, winning her singles match against Sevelanne Newsham 21-5, 21-10,

With sides level the men’s doubles match was a tense affair, with Palmer and Rohan Pai narrowly squeezing past James Linares and Kasper Thy Jessen 2-17, 21-17.

The decisive match proved to be the ladies doubles, which went to three sets, and saw Calow and Rowena Cespedes edge to a 21-19, 15-21, 21-19 win over Alison Jessen and Newsham.

The dead rubber went to Gibraltar, with Alison Jessen and Kasper Thy Jessen taking the mixed doubles against Cespedes and Daniel Hughes 21-18, 23-21.

In the sailing, Kalin Hillier’s quest for gold has been put on hold with fog preventing any racing taking place in St Aubin’s Bay.

The men’s and women’s beach volleyball teams are also in action this morning, as are the men’s basketball team, and the Island’s archers.

The basketball side will continue the defence of their gold medal at 1pm Bermuda time against Isle of Wight.
