Somerset’s emphatic 150-run triumph over Premier Division champions St David’s at Somerset Cricket Club last weekend proved to be a family affair for cousins Joshua Gilbert and Justin Donawa.

All-rounder Gilbert hit 94 and claimed two wickets with his off spin, while fast bowler Donawa seized a maiden five-wicket haul in the top flight during a fiery spell that kept the St David’s batsmen on the back foot.

Somerset piled up 242 after being sent in to bat and then dismissed St David’s for 92 in 27.2 overs.

“It was a great team effort and we all pulled our weight,” Gilbert said.

Gilbert dominated a 132-run third-wicket partnership with Jekon Edness, the Somerset captain, that ultimately put the game beyond the visiting side’s reach.

“The coach [Jeff Richardson] has been telling us about one of our top four batsmen batting through the entire innings,” Gilbert said.

“It was unlucky for me not to get my hundred, but I’d rather get 94 and win than a hundred and lose any day.

“I owe my team some runs because I have been getting starts and then getting out. So it was nice to actually play a mature innings and bat through.”

As for his cousin’s superb display of bowling, Gilbert added: “I am glad for Justin getting his first five-wicket haul for the season.

“We are connected through the Bailey family and we enjoy playing together, enjoy each other’s company and that victory was very special for us.”

Donawa, who is a Carifta Games gold medallist in the triple jump and a member of the Bermuda football team, returned the compliment.

“It was great to see Joshua get 94,” he said.

“It was unfortunate he couldn’t get his hundred. But I still think he performed very well and I was happy for him.”

Donawa tormented the St David’s batsmen en route to claiming career-best figures of five for 19 from 6.2 overs in his first outing of the season.

“It was my first game back and I was just trying to get in the groove of things and it all worked out for me,” he said.

“For the most part I was bowling the right line and length and the pitch was playing pretty good.

“I had a couple of loose balls here and there, but I can work on that as the weeks go by.”
