A St George’s man who attacked another man with a pole has been ordered to complete 20 hours unpaid work for the community.

Mark Trott, 49, previously pleaded guilty to unlawfully wounding Steven Paynter and having an offensive weapon in his possession in a public place.

The assault took place at Tobacco Bay on September 15 last year.

A victim impact statement prepared by Mr Paynter was read to the court by prosecutor Cindy Clarke during Friday morning’s sentencing hearing.

He said: “This attack was unprovoked. He hit me two or three times in my head before I gripped him and we fell to the ground.

“I suffered from headaches after the attack. I had to have ten stitches in my forehead and could not work for a week.”

Last week Mr Trott, who has no previous convictions, said: “I regret doing this assault but I did not start this nonsense. He kept irritating me and I got tired and tired and fed up.”

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo imposed probation for 18 months, which will include 20 hours community service.
