Butterfield ends golden week in style

Golden moment: Mayho stands on the podium after winning the men's town centre criterium

Taahira Butterfield completed a sprint double at the NatWest Island Games after taking the gold medal in the 200 metres in Jersey yesterday.

There was gold too for Dominique Mayho in the men’s town centre criterium, although the controversial nature of that race and the women’s race, in which Zoenique Williams escaped a nasty crash with nothing more than a bruised leg were still being verified last night.

Williams had a lucky escape compared to Ann Henson, from Anglesey, who sustained a broken collar bone in the incident.

The women’s race was won by Kim Ashton of Jersey, but she and her team maybe penalised for arriving late at the start line, with officials due to rule today on the issue.

Butterfield, who also won the 100m this week, posted a time of 25.51, finishing ahead of her team-mate Natasha Trott, who crossed the line in 25.62.

For Trott, it was her second silver of the Games, having also finished runner-up to Butterfield in the 100m.

Butterfield, who attends Albany State University of New York, said: “I’m feeling a bit tired after the heats, semis and finals, but I’m happy to be finished and have good results.

“I feel good and proud that I doubled up in the 100 and 200. Off the turn [in the 200] I was behind a little as I didn’t get out well, but I managed to pick up speed and catch up on the straight.

“I gave it my all as I had to receive the gold medal.”

Faye Cox, of the Shetland Islands, took the bronze in 25.68.

Kalien Hillier filled out Bermuda’s medal haul from day five of the NatWest Island Games with a bronze medal in the Laser Standard sailing event.

Hillier finished first and fourth in his last two races to finish on the podium in an up and down week of sailing.

The competition was dominated by Eifion Mon of Anglesey, who finished first in five of the eight races this week.

David Hillier finished 18th.

Peter Dill and Stephen O’Reilly finished eighth and nineteenth, respectively, in the Laser Radial sailing event, putting Bermuda in fifth overall in the team event.
