About 60 volunteers joined forces from various organisations on Sunday to help clean up Elbow Beach after the July 4 celebrations.

Some 70 bags of trash were collected amounting to about 1,500lbs of waste — equivalent to about a pound of waste for each person who attended.

Executive director of environmental group Keep Bermuda Beautiful Anne Hyde said she was working with the Parks Department to increase the number of trash cans that will be available for the event in future.

She told The Royal Gazette: “The event went very well and we realise that more trash cans will be needed for future events. We were impressed that people were piling their trash up against the bins which were overflowing. We are still trying to push the idea that if you can take anything to the beach with you, you can also take it home.”

The volunteers who gave up their time from 9am to 11am yesterday included tourism ambassadors organised through the Bermuda Tourism Authority, members of staff from the Coral Beach Club, KBB volunteers and US Coast Guard cadets from the tall ship Eagle which is visiting the Island.

The Bermuda Tourism Authority has been involved in several beach clean-ups since its inception.

BTA spokesman Glenn Jones added: “Although the BTA has no authority over public beaches it is keenly interested in doing its part to maintain and improve them to enhance the experience of all users — visitors and residents alike.”
