Leverock to rescue for Islanders

Dante Leverock’s last-ditch clearance helped earn Harrisburg City Islanders their first win in almost two months on Saturday.

After a run of two defeats and three draws in their last five games, the Islanders finally picked up a 1-0 win over Wilmington Hammerheads.

Leverock blasted the ball off his own goalline after Nick Noble, the Harrisburg goalkeeper, had been beaten by a strike from Qudus Lawal, the Hammerheads striker.

Harrisburg have made a habit of conceding late goals this season, and the visitors’ best chance came right after Cardel Benbow had given Harrisburg the lead.

Benbow’s speed frustrated the Wilmington defence all night, but he had just enough left to blow past the defender after he received a ball from Jason Plumhoff on a quick break eight minutes from time.

He was in on the goalkeeper alone and rifled a shot over the shoulder to put the Islanders up for good.
