Under-19s face tough task

Tough task: Stafford with squad members Calum Maule, Chakote Wainwright-Basden, Laurent Wellman and Rory Crofts

The Bermuda Rugby under-19 squad fly to Orlando today for the Nacra Under-19 Caribbean Championships.

After winning promotion last year to the top tier of the under-19 division Christopher Stafford, the Bermuda coach, has been preparing the squad for the challenge ahead.

“We’ve been working hard as a group for quite some time,” Stafford said. “After a strong domestic schools season, and with a number of players having been a part of the under-17 squad who played in the UK in March this year we’re excited to get over to Orlando to play.”

Bermuda enter this year’s tournament seeded sixth and have a tough first game against the United States South A side on Sunday. The winners of that match will face Turks and Caicos Islands or Barbados in the semi-final of the cup competition on Tuesday, the losers will play each other in the plate competition on Wednesday.

“We’re under no illusion that it’s going to be a tough a tournament against strong countries who are hungry for success, but so are we,” Stafford said.
