Fisher enjoys a sweet midsummer return

Victory in Canada: Eddie Fisher, centre, on the podium with runners-up Michael Humphries and Ken Riegel

Bermuda’s Eddie Fisher won his age category in the Midsummer’s 8K road race in British Columbia, Canada.

It was an extra-sweet result for Fisher who two years ago, in the same race, picked up a serious knee injury and was denied an age division podium place after being overtaken by a rival in the final metres of the race.

Although still on his return to full fitness, Fisher competed in the race in Kelowna and came first in the 65-69 age group in a time of 38mins 11sec. He was 53rd overall, and beat fellow senior athlete Michael Humphries, the man who overtook him in the final stretch of the 2013 race to claim third place in the 60-64 division.

On Sunday, Fisher started the race at 7.40 minute-mile pace and passed a number of runners in the final kilometre, including Humphries who eventually finished second.

The overall race winner was Aaron Heidt in 26:47, with Rachel Gardner first woman in 32:23.
