Building stronger, more united families

Jesus’s life was the perfect model for how we ought to live out our days.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses couldn’t agree more. They’re hosting a free three-day convention at Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts next weekend called Imitate Jesus.

Its goal? To equip parents and children with the tools to build stronger and more united families by following Jesus’s lead.

Church spokesman Brandon Doars explains:

Why have the Jehovah’s Witnesses decided to host this conference?

The Imitate Jesus Convention is part of a series of conventions that are being held around the world this year, including North, Central and South America, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, as well as Australia. It will promote the “keys” to family happiness, as taught by Jesus Christ.

What’s happening on July 17, 18 and 19?

The programme will feature discourses, symposiums, interviews, demonstrations as well as several video presentations that will be projected on a large overhead screen. A special feature of our convention that all eagerly anticipate, will be two live, full-costume Bible dramas, based on an aspect of Jesus’s life, along with the baptism of new members.

Will there be any guest speakers or special breakout sessions?

There will be three guest speakers from New York: Andrew Simms, a travelling representative of Watchtower, Bible and Tract Society and Peter Schulz and Quince Taylor from our world headquarters.

I understand you will be discussing the keys to family happiness. What are some of these and why is “family happiness” so important to our spiritual lives?

The “keys” to family happiness are embodied in Godly qualities promoted by Jesus, through his personal example and teachings. The carefully prepared programme will feature these “keys”, by means of a number of symposium talks. One is called Imitate Jesus, not Satan, by being Appreciative, Truthful and Loyal. The “keys” to family happiness will also be highlighted in talks directed to specific family members. Some of the topics to be discussed are called Dear Young Ones, Precious Wives, Loving Husbands and Wise Parents. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that the peace and happiness families can derive from following Jesus’s example, increases spirituality. This in turn brings God’s smile of approval and blessing.

From your understanding of what’s happening in the community, are many people struggling with issues in the family?

The Bible has accurately foretold the challenges seen, not only in our small community, but worldwide. A number of these challenges have had a negative impact on the happiness and stability of the family.

What are some of the common ones you’ve seen?

In varying degrees, many face economic problems, issues concerning the disciplining of children, and marital fidelity.

What do you hope people who attend this conference would leave with — encouragement? Renewed sense of hope?

A core belief of Jehovah’s Witnesses is that Jesus lived his life as a model for us to follow. We are confident that all who attend the Imitate Jesus Convention, regardless of background, lifestyle or religion, will benefit in practical ways from his example and teachings. In particular, parents will be helped to better use their time and resources to build a more secure and loving family environment.
