A man was in guarded condition at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital this morning after a vehicle overturned in a crash yesterday afternoon.

The driver and two passengers - his wife and son - were reportedly injured in the crash, which took place on Middle Road, Southampton, near Jews Bay at about 1pm.

According to a police spokesman, as of this morning the driver, a 42-year-old Devonshire man, remained in guarded condition at the hospital’s intensive care unit.

The injuries to the passengers are not believed to be life-threatening.

The white vehicle was badly damaged in the incident. Police blocked off a section of Middle Road, between Lighthouse Road and Church Road, as they carried out an investigation at the scene. The road was reopened at about 4pm.

The spokesman said: “It appears that the car involved overturned injuring the driver, a 42-year-old Devonshire man and his two passengers, believed to be a 34-year-old woman and a six-year-old boy.

“Apparently the driver had to be assisted out of the vehicle and was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment of a head injury.

Fire Service spokesperson Sergeant Russann Francis stated that the service responded to a report of “a single vehicle travelling with a family of three was reported to have overturned”.

“The Fire Service responded to the incident with a crew of four personnel to find one male trapped in the vehicle,” she said. “Fire personnel used the ‘Jaws of Life’ tools to extricate the gentleman to safety.

A section of Middle Road, Southampton between Church Road and Lighthouse Road was temporarily closed while a traffic collision investigator and the Forensic Support Unit examined the scene, but it was reopened to traffic at around 4pm.

Inquiries regarding this collision are under way and any witnesses should contact the main police telephone number 295-0011.
