Take a ride on the East End bus

From the natural beauty of Clearwater Beach to the rich cultural heritage of Carter House and St David’s Lighthouse — a whole new set of experiences has just opened up for visitors in Bermuda.

A new East End beach bus is up and running to finally make it easy for tourists to make the trip from St George’s to St David’s.

For $6 a day, people can hop on or hop off the vehicle as it loops between St George’s Town Square, Carter House Museum, St David’s Battery, St David’s Lighthouse, Clearwater Beach, Gombey’s Bar and Cooper’s Island.

It accompanies another beach bus that already runs around several key spots in St George’s, including Tobacco Bay and the Unfinished Church.

The St David’s beach bus was launched last week; yesterday, members of the Bermuda Tourism Authority tried it out for themselves.

Pat Phillip-Fairn, the chief product and experiences development officer, said: “The team really enjoyed getting the beach bus experience from the visitor’s perspective.

“We hopped off the bus at Clearwater Beach and we were inside Gombey’s bar in just a few seconds — just like a visitor might do. This new bus service will literally drive business in the East End.”

The St George’s beach bus was started by St George’s business owners in May. They added the St David’s service after winning funding from the BTA.

Ms Phillip-Fairn said: “We knew that there had been a longstanding issue about transportation down to St David’s for visitors.

“So we saw the St David’s version of a beach bus as something that would work from our perspective and it would expose the visitors to beaches and historical sites that are underutilised generally.

“And so they started the beach bus service and we see it as a very, very good, well-needed addition to expose the visitors to another type of experience in the East End.”

Calworth Furbert, the beach bus driver, said: “I served on the tourism board for about 10 years so I think that I have a lot of experience in the industry. I love it.

“The bus to St David’s is doing very well so far, making multiple runs per day.”

The beach bus is a joint initiative between Just Add Water adventure sports and the Tobacco Bay management team. The partners are Faith Bridges, Neil Moncrieff, Raymond Walker and Belcario Thomas.
