Burglar sentenced to six months in prison

A 30-year-old man has been sentenced to six months in prison for breaking into the home of his girlfriend’s brother and stealing more than $8,000 worth of goods.

Shayne Robert Trott, 30, of no fixed abode, had previously pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to trespassing at the Warwick property on January 5.

He admitted stealing electrical items, kitchen utensils and food, worth a total of $8,299, belonging to Edwin Wolffe.

Trott also pleaded guilty to dishonestly receiving stolen goods on an unknown date between September 17 last year and January 17.

At a court appearance in May, the court heard that Mr Wolffe came home to find his residence had been broken into.

After hearing that it was Trott, he confronted him and Trott returned some of the stolen items several days later.

Among the returned goods was a Sony PlayStation that did not belong to Mr Wolffe.

He called the Police, who retrieved the PlayStation and proceeded to search Trott’s residence.

The PlayStation was later identified as having been taken from a Sound View Road, Sandys, property.

In court today, Trott apologised to the courts and said “it won’t happen again”.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo, however, said the burglary was calculated and deliberate.

He added that despite some items having been returned, Mr Wolffe suffered a substantial loss because some high-value property had not been recovered.

Mr Tokunbo sentenced Trott to six month’s imprisonment for the burglary and ordered that this be followed by 18 months’ probation for both charges.

Trott is to adhere to all the conditions recommended in the pre-sentencing reports.
