Drug offender gets nine-month jail sentence

A Devonshire “drug pusher” was sentenced to nine months in prison when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court this morning.

Michael James Doucet, 33, had previously pleaded guilty to possessing 6.48g of heroin with intent to supply in Devonshire on November 9, 2012.

The court heard that Doucet is a drug addict, who has convictions for drug possession dating back to 2005.

He was convicted of possessing cocaine in 2005, ecstasy in 2010, and cocaine and cannabis in 2012.

While magistrate Archibald Warner agreed with defence lawyer Saul Dismont that Doucet needs treatment, he added that Doucet “is also a drug pusher”.

“Because he is an addict does not spare him in these circumstances,” Mr Warner said.

Taking into account all of the circumstances, the direction from the higher courts and the pre-sentencing reports, Mr Warner sentenced Doucet to nine months in prison.

He ordered that this be followed by three years’ probation with the condition that Doucet be assessed for all possible drug treatment programmes, including Drug Treatment Court.
