Swing into summer with Rasta Rebel

Summer Swing — the name is appropriate considering the season.

Rasta Rebel hopes the song will become a staple on playlists at this time of year.

The Bermudian singer, who was born Toriano Dunkley, only recently started performing his own songs despite having written for others for years.

“I was inspired and liked it but at the time wasn’t bold enough to make that stance,” he told Lifestyle. “I got to an age and started writing for people and inspiring people in the studio and then decided I should try it myself. So I’ve been doing for the last seven or eight years. I got deep into it and decided to take it to another level.”

His hope is to make it big on the world stage. To that end he’s partnered with UK producer Genius and is in the midst of collaborating with artists in Jamaica. He’s also in production talks with entertainers in the UK and the US.

Personal appearances, television and internet commercials, scriptwriting and a host of entertainment-related activities keep the father-of-two busy.

He’s also occupied with his day job — a landscaping business he runs himself.

“I’m a go-getter,” he said of his hectic schedule. “I put myself out there and make it happen.”

Rasta Rebel’s first CD, Ras Government, came out five years ago. He followed it up with a mixtape, The Rebellion.

Power 95 radio host David Rodigan put him in touch with local producer Donald Robinson of Near Future Records, for Summer Swing. He considers himself “blessed” that he was able to get Tosha Coddrington to sing the hook for the song.

“She won Bermuda Idol a few years back,” he said. “I know a lot of female singers but for Summer Swing I picked Tosha even though she was hard to get — she’s got twin children and is busy.”

The video took more than two weeks to complete. A quality product was the driving force, Rasta Rebel said. Models and location spots were all selected with that in mind.

Check out the video for glimpses of Tucker’s Point, Grotto Bay, South Shore Warwick, Cobb’s Hill, Spring Hill and Fenton’s Drive, Pembroke.

His work has put him in touch with Jamaican reggae artist Capleton; an album will soon follow.

“This is hard work I’m putting in now,” he said. “It’s a passion. It takes a balance to deal with everything — the Almighty, family, kids, talent, relations and my work — but I’m looking to take this to the world stage. As part of that I’ve got to highlight where I come from and everywhere I go I’m bigging up Bermuda.”
