Bermuda drawn in pool B

Relied upon: Manders

Bermuda will be looking to hit the ground running when they launch their Davis Cup America’s Zone Group Three campaign in Panama City today.

The Island’s team, led by non-playing captain and coach Ricky Mallory, have been pitted in Pool B along with the likes of Guatemala, Bahamas, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago.

Details of Bermuda’s first opponents were not available at press time last night.

The remainder of Bermuda’s Davis Cup squad comprises of Jenson Bascome, David Thomas and Neil Towlson.

Bermuda finished sixth in their group and recorded a maiden tie victory at this level at last year’s tournament held in Puerto Rico and will undoubtedly look to improve on that showing this time around.

“As a team we’re really looking to do better than we did last year,” said Manders, prior to the team’s departure.

“We’re always looking to get a little bit better, but our main goal is to try to get promotion.”

Bermuda, who relied on Manders to help them gain promotion to group three in 2009, have never played at a higher level of competition.

The Davis Cup America’s Zone Group Three tournament, to be held July 20 to 25, consists of nine countries bidding for the two promotion spots up for grabs.

Participants will be divided in two pools and will play a round robin format with the eventual top two in each pool facing off in a play-off to determine which two nations will advance to Americas Zone Group II next year.

All matches are being played outdoors on clay at the Cancha Estadio Centro de Alto Rendimiento Fred Maduro.
