Camp opportunity: Mikel Dill in action for Bermuda under-17s

Four of Bermuda’s young rugby players are being put through their paces at a high performance camp at Rutgers University.

Mikel Dill, Corrie Cross, Emily Sinclair and Hayley Place are in New Jersey this week at the Atavus Rugby Residential Camp.

While there, the quartet are experiencing the same environment that members of the United States national team do when they attend a training camp.

Elite coaches Matt Hawkins, Shawn Pittman and Emilie Bydwel will combine fitness testing, delivered scores, strength and conditioning instruction, as well as high performance education in mental

skills, tactical development, and nutrition as part of the camp which runs until Thursday.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our youth players to learn from some of the best coaches in USA rugby,” said Patrick Calow, the Bermuda Rugby Football Union’s youth development officer. “They will get to train and play alongside some of the top youth players in the US as well as understand more about the pathway towards College Scholarships through rugby.”

The BRFU have a close relationship with Atavus Rugby, which was previously known as Serevi Rugby, and professional coaches visit the Island several times a year to put Bermuda’s players through a variety of drills, while also working with the national teams at overseas tournaments.

The relationship is made possible by XL Catlin’s significant sponsorship of rugby on the Island.
