No rest for Pacers

Off again: Pacers athletes are travelling to North Carolina today

With 16 medals from last weekend’s trip to Philadelphia safely stored away, the Bermuda Pacers head out today for the Russell E Blunt East Coast Invitational in North Carolina this weekend.

The Pacers youngsters enjoyed success at the United Age Group Track Coaches Association Championships at the weekend, winning six gold, seven silver and three bronze medals while four mothers — Suzanne Ming, Paula Goodchild, Sonia Lottimore and Tawana Trott — teamed up to take silver in the parents 4x100 metres relay race.

Sakari Famous set a new record in the 15-16 girls high jump, breaking a five-year-old meet record with her leap of 1.72 metres to raise the record from the 1.58 metre mark set in 2010.

Selah Tuzo clinched two gold medals in the 11-12 girls 800 and 1500 metres while Zekiah Lewis placed first in the 13-14 girls triple jump with her leap of 10.74 metres. Tuzo recorded winning times of 2min 26.16sec for the 800 metres and 5:12.25 for the 1500 metres.

Tuzo was also part of the 11-12 4x400 metres relay team (with Zakayza Parsons, Koa Goodchild and Tesyah-Mahle Astwood) which won gold as did the Pacers 13-14 boys 4x400 metres team of Malik Joell, Jayden Ming, Ryan Outerbridge and Clevonte Lodge-Bean.

Asia-Leigh Hollis won silver medals in the 9-10 girls 100 metres in 14.53 and long jump while Parsons finished second in the 100 metres (13.08) and 200 metres (27.20) and long jump. Ming was second in the boys 1500 and 3000 metres in times of 4:42.26 and 10:03.82 respectively.

The bronze medals were won by Aaliah Fadda in the 11-12 girls 400 metres; Aaron Jacobs in the 15-16 boys 1500 metres and Ryan Outerbridge in the 13-14 boys 3000 metres.

The Pacers finished first in the 11-12 girls with 66 points from 15 events and second in the 13-14 boys with 51 points, three less than winners Nittany Track and Field Club. In combined scores the Pacers were fourth in the 11-12 age group and second in the 13-14s.

A squad of 41 will travel to North Carolina to compete in the East Coast Invitational, the club’s 34th appearance at the event. Last year 32 members brought back 35 medals from the meet, including 17 gold.
