Rawlins chooses Sussex this year

Looking to the future: Delray Rawlins

It’s official, Delray Rawlins won’t be returning for Cup Match next week, leaving challengers St George’s with another spot to fill.

Millard Rawlins, father of the Bermuda Under-19 captain, confirmed yesterday that Delray has obligations with the Sussex Academy team, in fact he is presently playing for them in a three-day game against Middlesex where he scored 87 yesterday.

“He just hit me on whatsapp to say he just got out on 87,” said Rawlins. “A lot of people are saying he’s coming back, but no, not unless something drastic happens. Definitely not.

“He’s got cricket right up until the day before Cup Match. He said maybe next year, but definitely not this year. We would have liked for him to come back, but we know that he wants a pro career and the only way for him to get it going is by staying out there.

“As parents we have to look at that fact and say maybe next year.

“The best thing is for him to continue on, we sat down and talked about it and this is what he wanted. He’s got an opportunity that he worked hard to get, and we’re really proud of him.”

Rawlins, a former player himself with Warwick, Police, PHC and the Prison Officers team, and his wife were proud parents when they watched Delray mark his first Cup Match last year by scoring 55 not out in the first innings and taking three wickets in the match.

“It took cricket for me to a whole new level,” said his father. “It was a joy to see him get the 50, he did tell me the night before, ‘daddy I’m nervous’, but I told him to ‘just go out there and play your game, the way you know how’.

“The family was more nervous than him leading up to the 50, I can tell you that. Cup Match is a big thing for us but we have to look at the bigger picture for him, with the opportunities that he has. He’s doing his thing in England and I’m happy for him.”

n Kamau Leverock has been included in the Glamorgan Second XI 13-man squad for today’s one-day game against Gloucestershire Seconds.

His selection comes after the Bermuda all-rounder helped Glamorgan Seconds beat Gloucestershire by 157 runs in a three-day match which finished yesterday.

Glamorgan scored 454 for five declared and 25 without loss as Leverock opened the batting in the second innings, finishing with 24 not out from nine balls, scoring four fours and a six. He did not bat in the first innings

In reply Gloucestershire scored 139 for five declared in the first innings as they tried to force a result, and were bowled out for 183 in the second innings chasing 340 to win. Leverock took one wicket for 26 runs from seven overs.
