Bermuda’s “best and brightest” debaters are heading to Singapore to compete in the World School Debate Championship 2015.

Education Minister Wayne Scott congratulated Bermuda’s participants — Lucien Anderson, a recent graduate of the Berkeley Institute; Megan Sutcliffe, a BHS student; Kimika Jackson, dual enrolled student at the Berkeley Institute and the Bermuda College; and Namratai Bish, a BHS student, who have put in the effort to prepare adequately for this event.

The team leaves Bermuda on Sunday under the leadership of Gladstone Thompson, national debate coach 2015, and Arlene Swan, team manager and adjudicator.

The students will debate eight rounds — four prepared and four impromptu. The titles of the prepared topics are: The house would ban zero hour contract; This house would require defendants in criminal trials to be represented exclusively by public defenders; This house supports academic tracking in primary and secondary education and; This house believes that cities with significant immigrant population should actively break up ethnic enclaves.

Team Bermuda face New Zealand, Philippines, Germany, Israel, Sweden, UAE, Palestine, and Bahrain.
