Unhappy Trott opts to stay away

Hopes dashed: Fubler bowls during training at Wellington Oval, while Eve, left, waits for his turn

St George’s will have at least one more bowling spot to fill tomorrow, with Rodney Trott believed to have ruled himself out of Cup Match this year.

According to club sources Trott has not been picked for tomorrow’s final trial because he has not been training at the club.

Trott, who was vice-captain last year, was reportedly unhappy with the process behind OJ Pitcher’s appointment as captain in place of Oronde Bascome and has stayed away from Wellington Oval.

On Tuesday night, when the other hopefuls were being put through their paces at the club, Trott was training with his league side Bailey’s Bay.

“We haven’t seen much of him and we can’t put the onus on one person,” Ryan Steede, the St George’s coach, said.

“If he makes himself unavailable it creates a chance for somebody else, but Cup Match will go on.”

Trott has been largely ineffective with the ball over the past couple of years, and bowled a total of eight overs in 2014, giving up 28 runs in the second innings after not bowling in the first innings.

The spinner made his Cup Match debut in 2006, and has taken a total of eight wickets for 408 runs from 104 overs bowled at an average of 51.0, while he has scored 253 runs in 14 innings with a highest score of 48.

With the confirmation that Delray Rawlins would not be returning from England to regain his spot and Trott, last year’s vice-captain, is not interested this year, the challengers could have two spin bowling spots to fill.

Kavon Fubler had been bidding to fill one of those places in the St George’s Cup team, but those hopes have been dashed because he is ineligible,

St George’s welcomed Fubler to training this week with the Cup Match prospects ahead of choosing their teams for tomorrow’s final trial match, only to be reminded that the Willow Cuts spin bowler was a reserve for Somerset in 2010. That was the year the two clubs agreed that a player who was named as reserve for one club, cannot subsequently play for the other.

That was the case previously, most recently in 1992 when Jeff Richardson made his debut for Somerset after being a reserve for St George’s in 1983. Terry Fray also switched clubs, playing for St George’s in 1981 after serving as a reserve in Somerset’s 1979 cup winning team.

Fubler had a falling out with Somerset in 2011 over comments he made on his Facebook page about club secretary Charlotte Simons after not being selected for the Cup Match team that year. The remarks brought Fubler a ban from the club grounds, though the ban has been lifted and Fubler is able to play there with Willow Cuts.

However, playing for Somerset in Cup Match is not something the club is apparently considering at this time.

“There are rumours Somerset don’t want him,” a former Cup Match player said this week.

That forced Fubler to take his chances with St George’s and he attended training with the players, though now he won’t be included in the selection for the teams for tomorrow’s match.

One new face at St George’s still trying to make the team is veteran spinner Vernon Eve of Southampton Rangers, who trained and is expected to play some part in the trial.

•Kamau Leverock took three wickets and was the second highest scorer for Glamorgan Second XI as they lost to Gloucestershire Seconds by 102 runs in a Second XI Trophy match in Cardiff yesterday.

The Bermuda all-rounder claimed three for 54 from ten overs as first-change bowler as Gloucestershire were dismissed for 188 after winning the toss and electing to bat.

Glamorgan were then dismissed for 86 in 23.5 overs with Leverock, batting at number nine, scoring 13 off 11 balls, and hitting two sixes.
