A Smith’s woman has been banned from the roads for two years for causing grievous bodily harm to a man by driving without due care and attention.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court, Maria Rego, 71, pleaded guilty to injuring Paul Lowry in Smith’s on June 1.

Mr Lowry suffered a fractured rib, a punctured lung, a broken nose and abrasions to his face, arms and leg.

The court heard that Rego was driving her car east on Middle Road when she turned into Kilderry Lane and collided with Mr Lowry.

Rego told the court through an interpreter that she always drives cautiously and did not see Mr Lowry.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo disqualified Rego from driving all vehicles for two years and handed her a fine of $800.

•In a separate matter, a Pembroke teenager pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to Jeffrey Place by driving in a dangerous manner.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, Raheem Ray, 18, also admitted driving while disqualified and driving without a valid driver’s licence in Devonshire on March 8.

Prosecutor Takiyah Burgess told the court that Ray was riding his motorcycle on First Avenue, Devonshire, when police officers attempted to intercept him.

But Ray accelerated and turned onto Montpelier Road, ignoring a stop sign. He ran another stop sign as he turned onto Middle Road and collided with a motorcycle.

When the police officers arrived at the scene, the defendant and Mr Place were lying on the ground.

Mr Place was bleeding from his mouth, his breathing was impaired and seven of his teeth were scattered on the ground.

Ray’s pillion passenger ran, but was caught by the officers.

Mr Tokunbo granted $5,000 bail with a like surety, ordered a social inquiry report and adjourned the matter to September 9 for sentencing.

•Also in court this week, a Hamilton Parish woman was fined $800 for careless driving.

Eveline Simons, 56, pleaded guilty to the offence, which took place in Hamilton Parish on February 11.

The court heard that Simons was driving a car when she collided with an auxiliary cycle that was travelling east on North Shore Road, but had indicated to turn right.

Prosecutor Loxly Ricketts said Simons had failed to see the cycle at the junction of North Shore Road and My Lord’s Bay Road.

The accident resulted in the bike rider, Ashley Belgrave, receiving abrasions to her knees.

Mr Tokunbo handed Simons an $800 fine and gave her ten demerit points on her licence.
