Armed robbers target Mr Chicken Express

The owner of Mr Chicken Express is considering only accepting credit card transactions after the Devonshire takeaway restaurant was targeted by armed robbers for a second time.

Two males entered the outlet at about 10.20pm on Friday, one brandishing a bladed article, and made off with a small amount of cash.

The outlet was also targeted in April of last year when two men, one with a knife and another with a gun, approached the business demanding money but were unsuccessful.

Owner David Furbert, who was off-Island when the most recent incident took place, told The Royal Gazette: “They didn’t take much money — we learnt our lesson from the last time. After the first time, we started to encourage our customers to use credit cards and we are now pushing towards actually taking only credit cards. The staff are fine.

“We have security cameras but there was nothing to see because they were fully covered. It was the same last time even though we had adequate footage you couldn’t even tell what race they were they were that well covered.” None of the three employees present during Friday’s incident were harmed.

The incident is the latest in a spate of knife-related crime including the most recent, the fatal stabbing of Job Tucker, last week.

The robbers are described as about 6ft and slim, and were wearing black clothing and black helmets. Anyone who saw two men acting suspiciously in the area of Watlington Road East, Upland Street, Devonshire, on Friday evening, should call the Criminal Investigation Department on 295-0011. Alternatively, call Crime Stoppers on 800-8477.
