Take responsibility for your bad behaviour

Dear Sir,

Will you allow me to express my feelings on a comment made in your newspaper? The comment was reported to be made by a man, Sinclair Walker, aged 69.

He was found guilty of driving whilst impaired. Without going into all of the details of the arrest, Walker admitted drinking at a cricket game, but questioned why he was pulled over, stating that “all the people leaving the game had been drinking”.

The following comment, also attributed to Walker, tempted me to write.

“You’re supposed to be looking out for black people; you must be OBA!”

This comment floored me and made me delve into the understanding of what some are thinking here in Bermuda. Do some think that because of their skin colour they should be allowed to drive while impaired and, if arrested, it is because of the Government?

Do some think it is the Government’s fault that they are held to account for their failures?

Does Mr Walker’s comment imply that if the Government was one he supports, then he would not have been arrested for impaired driving? (This writer does not know who Mr Walker supports politically).

Shouldn’t we be responsible for our behaviour and not lay blame elsewhere?

Are we so blinded by dislike for each other politically that a mindset of such aforementioned is the norm?

Where is our community heading when wrong tries to justify wrong and then tries to blame the lawmakers with whom they disagree?

To Mr Walker, you were found guilty of a serious wrongdoing — impaired driving. To lay blame on the Government and to suggest because of your race you should be exonerated, I do not agree.

Black, white, male and female have all been convicted for impaired driving and not because of the Government, but because of their own bad actions!
