Ask Alyssa Rose who she is rooting for over Cup Match and you’ll get a quick answer.

“My family has supported St George’s for generations so it wasn’t even a decision for me,” the 22-year-old said.

“Also, having grown up in Smith’s, I need to make sure I support the east side, especially now that they have shown me so much love during the pageant.”

When she was younger her family would traditionally spend the two-day holiday on the water. This year she plans to attend the game, something she’s not done in a few years.

“My family would rent a Boston whaler to enjoy a day of swimming, fishing and bonding,” she said. “Of course we always had the radio to check in on our boys in blue!

“[This year], I’m eager to see what there is to offer. I’ll most likely be kept occupied by a delicious local fish sandwich, a Snowy’s snow cone and a few rounds of Crown and Anchor!”

Miss Rose, a marketing student in the UK, beat out five other young women to be crowned Miss Bermuda on July 5.

The experience changed her life. These days she feels like “a new and improved version” of herself.

“A significant part of being in the spotlight is having tough skin,” she said. “Since the pageant I have grown to be even more comfortable and confident with who I am.

“Additionally, I have become more considerate and cautious about my actions. There are always people watching and as a role model it is my obligation to uphold those values from which the Miss Bermuda Pageant organisation stems.”

Her telephone rang non-stop as people attempted to congratulate her after her big win; her social media accounts were “flooded” with supportive posts and pictures.

“I made it a point to try and thank every single person as each message was important to me,” she said.

Next on her agenda is the Miss World Pageant in Sanya, China on December 19.

“We are still awaiting the final paperwork from the Miss World Organisation, therefore we haven’t fully started to prepare,” Miss Rose said.

“But in the meantime, I am making sure that I diet appropriately and exercise to maintain my fitness levels as there is a sports aspect of the competition.

“Also, this year I would really love to have a platform for the Beauty with a Purpose section of Miss World. I’m in the process of trying to develop a plan and reach out to people in the community to help turn my ideas into reality.”

At the moment however, she’s looking forward to cheering on her team at St George’s Cricket Field.

“The game will definitely be the best part of Cup Match this year for me,” she said. “It combines so many amazing aspects of ‘us’. The game highlights an important part of our history and the emancipation. It allows our people to enjoy the local talent while immersing ourselves more deeply into our culture through the cuisine, our competitive spirits and, of course, the always exciting Crown and Anchor games.”

Her tips for making the most out of the exciting long weekend? Wear sunscreen and stay hydrated.

“Also be cautious of water safety. Not every beach has a lifeguard so choose wisely, especially if you have young children,” she cautioned.

“It’s imperative for locals and visitors alike to keep Bermuda beautiful by disposing of trash appropriately. Lastly, keep an open mind and enjoy yourself as we are all blessed to enjoy this beautiful celebration!”

Miss Bermuda Alyssa Rose’s top five fashion picks for Cup Match:

1. Patterned monokini

The 22-year-old believes that everybody needs a statement bathing suit for the holiday. This Mara Hoffman one she found at Calypso would be perfect for a day at the beach or Non-Mariner’s race.

2. Statement jewellery

Looking for an easy way to make your Cup Match outfit unique? Miss Rose suggests you add some accessories. Her favourite bangles, earrings and rings — designed specifically for the Cup Match holiday — are available at Atelerie. The Reid Street store offered special bangles designed by Marlyn Schiff and St George’s and Somerset necklaces. Be quick though, the Somerset ones have already sold out.

3. Swell bottle

Miss Rose describes this as one of her “best-kept secrets”. She likes it because it keeps drinks cold for 24 hours and hot for 12 and the company gives a portion of every purchase to those in need.

“It’s ideal during these hot summer days, especially while camping to keep hydrated,” she said. Also available at Atelerie.

4. Classic sunshades

These little wonders are not only great for protecting your eyes, they’re fashionable as well. Miss Rose recently fell in love with a Prada tortoise shell pair from Sunglass and Watch Shop. She said: “The sophisticated shape, the corky print and the Prada name brand combine to create the perfect accessory! These are one of the most important elements of keeping you sun safe!”

5. Embellished dress

Miss Rose said this French Connection dress would be her “ultimate splurge” for $215. “The electric blue colour struck me immediately. As bold colours are a must-have for Cup Match, this dress effortlessly combines elegance and style, appropriate for any holiday event,” she said.
