Film-maker Andrew Stevenson is to record some of the America’s Cup action using his high-speed drone.

The footage will provide a bird’s-eye view of the catamarans in the water.

He shared aerial footage of entrants coursing through Bermuda’s waters during training sessions at the Hamilton Rotary Club yesterday.

The 45ft Artemis and Oracle cats were included in the film, recorded by a drone following the vessels at high speeds and capturing 180º continuous shots.

Mr Stevenson said he had plans to film more America’s Cup footage, but did not elaborate.

He told the crowd: “It is like watching Formula One racing on the water – now you have drones that can keep up with them you can be right there in the action.

“You can see the incredible perspective you can get from this drone, it is absolutely fascinating.”

Other sailing footage he has captured with the drone includes Bermuda fitted dinghies.

Mr Stevenson also discussed his work contributing towards international scientific data though whale fluke identification.

He said that during the 2015 season, he had catalogued a record 231 whale flukes, bringing the total number he has identified to 1,031.

Mr Stevenson has been contributing this data since 2007, when he launched the Bermuda Humpback Whale Research Foundation as a registered charity.

He noted during the question and answer session that the charity was now defunct, but he added that he intended to continue his work identifying whale flukes.

“It is very difficult in these economic times and it’s a bit of an esoteric subject,” he said.

“For all the amount of auditing and accountability and report writing, I was spending so much of my time doing that, I thought I would just go back to it being Andrew’s project.”

He also said he hoped to use the drones to collect aerial footage of whales next season.
