Academy sides both beaten

Bermuda’s National Academy teams both suffered defeats yesterday on their tour of England, the under-16s going down heavily by 171 runs to Oxfordshire and the under-14s suffering a 51-run loss to Skillz Skorpionz.

Oxfordshire posted 270 for six in their 40 overs match at Hurstpierpoint with Charlie Miller, batting at No 5, smashing 130 not out from just 78 balls to lead the way.

Coming to the crease at 87 for three in the 20th over, Miller hit nine fours and six sixes as he shared in useful partnerships of 74, 57 and 40 for the fourth, fifth and sixth wickets during his 92 minutes at the crease.

Kameron Mason was the best Bermuda bowler with two for 15. Dalin Richardson and Torleair Caines, who shared the new ball, both had figures of one for 39 while spinner Nzari Paynter took one for 57.

The under-16s replied with 99 in 32.4 overs with Richardson top scoring with 20 after coming in at No 6 with the team in early trouble at 37 for four in the thirteenth over, which became 37 for five the next over when Cameron Jeffers departed for one after facing 17 balls. Richardson hit three fours in his 40-ball knock while Kristian Singh supported with 19 from 37 balls.

Jade Morrissey, the opener and wicketkeeper, was the only other batsman in double figures with 14 before he was first to depart when the score was 19. Luke Cheshire, who took the new ball for Oxfordshire, did the early bowling damage on his way to figures of three for ten.

The Bermuda Under-14s put up a strong fight in their run chase after dismissing Skillz Skorpionz for 215 in 38.3 overs before replying with 164 in 37 overs in the match at Bedes Senior School. Will Lucas was the top batsman for Skorpionz with 94 in 72 balls.

Skorpionz were 50 for three after ten overs when Lucas came in at No 5 to add 70 for the fourth wicket with Oli van Noort. Miguel Postlethwaite, who shared the new ball with Mills, claimed three for 22, while Mills had two for 40 off eight. Revaughn Johnson took two for 23 and Justin Smith two for 28.

The under-14s recovered from 13 for two after 7.1 overs as Marcus Scotland and opener Jarryd Richardson put on 52 for the third wicket. Scotland scored 64 off 46 balls with 12 fours to lead the batting while LeiLanni Nesbeth hit four fours in her knock of 16. Jacob Buttifant took four for 25.

The Bermuda Under-14s used fourteen players, including Postlethwaite and Mills who bowled but did not bat, while the Skillz Skorpionz used 12.
