Mid Ocean to host Canada championship

The picturesque Mid Ocean Club

Mid Ocean Club is set to host the inaugural Nike Golf PGA Team Championship of Canada from October 26 to 29.

The newly created and unique championship features two PGA of Canada professionals pairing up with the partner of his or her choice to compete for the title and a share of the $90,000 purse.

“The Nike Golf PGA Team Championship of Canada marks a new and exciting chapter in the association’s proud history of national championships,” Constant Priondolo, the PGA of Canada president, said.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to be heading to the beautiful island of Bermuda and the iconic Mid Ocean Club.”

The Bermuda Tourism Authority and the Fairmont Southampton Hotel will partner with the tournament organisers.

Ranked the 47th best golf course outside of the United States by Golf Digest, the Mid Ocean Club was designed by world-renowned architect Charles Blair Macdonald and first opened for play in 1921.

The club hosted the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in 2007 and 2008.

“Our vision for this event from its inception was to create the most memorable and unique experience on the PGA of Canada schedule,” Tyler Keenan, Nike Golf Canada’s director of marketing, said.

“We are confident our plans for Nike Golf PGA Team Championship of Canada will deliver just that.”

With a different team format each day — four ball, scramble and foursomes — the 54-hole event features teams from across Canada. A qualifier was held in each PGA of Canada zone this summer with the top teams booking their ticket to Bermuda in the autumn.

The winning team will also receive an exemption into the PGA’s of Europe International Team Championship in November to represent the PGA of Canada.
