Man jailed for assaulting police officer

A Works and Engineering employee has been jailed for 30 days for assaulting a police officer.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Patrick Russell, 35, pleaded guilty to assaulting the officer with intent to do bodily harm in Pembroke on August 15.

Russell, of Southampton, also admitted urinating in public on the same date.

The court heard that police officers saw Russell urinating by the Emporium building at about 2.15am.

When they tried to arrest him, he resisted and approached the officer with a closed fist, punching him in the face.

He continued resisting arrest and the officers used a Taser to subdue him.

Russell, who has previous convictions for assaulting police and resisting arrest, told the court that his actions were out of character and that he had apologised in person to the officer.

Magistrate Archibald Warner sentenced Russell to 30 days’ imprisonment for assaulting the officer, with no separate penalty for urinating in public.
