Smith endures another rough day

Tough day: Smith

Camiko Smith had another rough day on the golf course yesterday.

The Bermuda professional shot an eight-over-par 80 at Trillium Wood Golf Club in Ontario as he tried to qualify for this week’s Great Waterway Classic.

Ten spots were up for grabs for the PGA Tour of Canada event, although in the end Smith fell well short of the leaders.

Smith’s day started well with a birdie at the par-3 2nd, but everything went downhill from then on, with back-to-back double bogeys at the par-4 4th and par-3 5th starting a slide he ultimately could not stop.

Bogeys at holes 6, 8 and 9, came either side of a birdie at 7, and while a par at the par-4 10th temporarily stemmed the bleeding, the back nine was not much better.

Two more bogeys at 11 and 12, followed by a double-bogey at 13, dropped Smith to nine over, before a cosalation birdie at the par-4 15th brought the Bermuda golfer back to eight over.

“There were some errant tee shots which I had difficulty recovering from and I didn’t manage to take advantage of the par-5s,” Smith said. “Today just didn’t go well.”

The round completed a tough couple of weeks for Smith, who came within a missed birdie putt of qualifying for the National Capital Open last week.

And a good opening round at a Mandarin Tour event several days earlier was undone by a final 18 holes that included five bogeys, two double-bogeys, and three birdies as he dropped from three under to three over and finished nineteenth.

Smith is presently in Canada as practice for next month’s European Tour Qualifying School, in which he believes he can compete.

“As you’re aware, it’s a tough road that I’m on and it’s important that I take on these qualifiers as well as participate in the mini tour events so that I maximise my chances at moving closer towards my end goal of playing on the PGA Tour,” Smith said.

“As last Monday’s qualifier at Hyland’s Golf Club shows, it can be a matter of one stroke that will open the door to a PGA event which could in turn translate to greater exposure and sponsorship opportunities, such as sponsor exemptions in PGA Tour events.

“I am still hopeful and working towards raising enough funds to attend the European Tour Q-school.”

Smith’s next event will be the Mandarin Tour event at Tangle Creek Golf Club beginning on September 1.
