Sandys man charged with double murder

A Sandys man appeared in Magistrates’ Court this morning charged with the premeditated murders of Haile Outerbridge and Ricco Furbert.

Gariko Benjamin, 23, was also charged with two counts of using a firearm while committing an indictable offence, namely premeditated murder.

He was charged in connection with Christoph Duerr and Le-Veck Roberts, who have already been jailed for life after being found guilty in June of the double murder of Outerbridge and Furbert, which took place on January 23, 2013 at Belvin’s variety store on Happy Valley Road in Devonshire.

Mr Benjamin is further accused of the attempted murder seven days earlier of Zico Majors, in connection with Roberts, and using a firearm and discharging a firearm to commit the indictable offence.

He was furthermore twice charged with taking a motorcycle without consent, once on January 16, 2013, and again seven days later.

In a separate matter, Mr Benjamin was accused of knowingly handling an FEG 9mm firearm and 9mm calibre ammunition in Sandys between a date unknown and April 23, 2011.

He was not required to enter a plea because the charges are indictable and must be heard in Supreme Court.

Senior magistrate Archibald Warner adjourned the matter to September 11 for mention and remanded Mr Benjamin into custody.
