Returning to beloved Bermuda after 46 years

Fond memories: A visitor who lived on the Island from 1965 to 1969 is coming back with his wife to visit old haunts such as Coral Beach Club, above, and the Paraquet restaurant

Dear Sir,

At the occasion of the 50th anniversary of my first arrival in Bermuda, I wanted to share with you what Bermuda has meant to me and how it has affected my life.

People ask me what was the best place you’ve ever lived. There has never been a question what that place was — Bermuda 1965 to 1969.

For many years now, I’ve been wanting to come back for a visit, but life, business or family considerations have prevented me from doing just that. I have the vision of sitting on a scooter with my wife, travelling the whole length of the Island.

Well, it looks like I will finally be able to take that ride.

Because I met a young lady in Bermuda in 1967, fell in love and married her. We can now, after 46 years of marriage, come back and visit the places I showed her in 1967.

Of course, I expect many of my favourite places are no longer there or have changed to reflect the current times.

Things and places that come to mind are the restaurant I worked for almost three years, the Miramar Restaurant on South Shore Road, and my first employer in Bermuda, the Coral Beach Club.

A lot of time was spent at the Elbow Beach Club, the Forty Thieves Club, and a special place for us was the Ace of Clubs. I have never forgotten the great times I had listening and dancing to The Savages. Sure wish I could meet Howie Rego, who I believe still lives in Bermuda. Would be nice to get his autograph on my original LP by The Savages.

One place I will visit for a sandwich is the Paraquet restaurant. Seems like most late nights we’d stop there for coffee on our way home.

Shouldn’t forget to mention that I even played football on the hotel team. I often wonder if any of the Sixties guys are still living in Bermuda.

Most importantly, though, like I mentioned before, it was in Bermuda where I met my wife and she and I will be there again the first week in September during our cruise on the Norwegian Breakaway.

It’s been 50 years since I first arrived on your Island. I’ve been dreaming about coming back for a long time.

Bermuda here we come!
