A 48-year-old man from the United States has been banned from the roads for 18 months.

Arthur Hayes, a Pembroke resident, pleaded guilty to driving while over the legal blood-alcohol limit when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court this morning.

He also admitted having no driver’s licence, no insurance and an unlicensed auxiliary cycle on August 15.

The court heard that Hayes was stopped on North Shore Road by police officers who saw him swerving on his cycle.

As Hayes identified himself, the officers noticed that he appeared to be intoxicated.

It was also determined that he did not hold a valid driver’s licence and that the cycle was not licenced or insured.

Hayes told the officers that he was supposed to take his driving test on Monday and that he’d had a couple drinks.

He was taken to Hamilton Police Station where it was determined that he had 123mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood — the legal limit is 80mg.

Hayes told the court today that he had only arrived on the Island a week before he was arrested and that he was not aware that the cycle needed to be licenced and insured.

“What a landing,” remarked magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo. “You should have come in on a parachute.”

Mr Tokunbo said Hayes “can forget about the licence” as he disqualified him from driving all vehicles for 18 months.

He also handed him a $1,200 fine for driving over the legal blood-alcohol limit, a $1,000 fine for not having insurance, a $150 fine for not possessing a driver’s licence and a $250 fine for the unlicensed cycle.
