A 28-year-old woman received a conditional discharge in Magistrates’ Court this morning after she admitted stealing three pairs of socks.

Melanie Gareau, a Pembroke resident, pleaded guilty to taking the items worth $25.90 from Brown & Co on August 24.

The court heard that Gareau was seen by a security guard holding three pairs of pink socks as she made her way towards the exit of the store.

The security guard followed her and approached her by the Reid Street entrance.

Gareau was no longer holding the items but they were found stashed in an umbrella she was carrying.

She was detained inside the store and the Police were called.

The court heard that Gareau, who intends to leave the Island tomorrow, had been working in Bermuda since June.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo, who remarked that Gareau had every reason to be humiliated and embarrassed, handed her a six-month conditional discharge after taking into account her early guilty plea, that the items were recovered and the small amount taken.
