Delight and Rudolph Morris: co-owners of the Orange Bay Company, which was established in 2009

Orange Bay Company has relocated to a storefront location in Hamilton.

The formerly vacant shop at Magnolia Place, on the corner of Victoria Street and Parliament Street, has been transformed into an Alladin’s cave of interesting vintage, pre-owned and repurposed furnishings, home goods and clothing.

“When we discovered Magnolia Place, we knew it would be perfect, because it would afford us more floor space for expanded inventory, while creating a unified environment for enhanced customer service and security,” said Delight Morris, who co-owns the business with her husband Rudolph.

“Our customers love their experience in this busy little corner of Hamilton.”

The consignment boutique business was started in 2009, just after the economic downturn hit. The concept quickly found favour with shoppers through word of mouth, direct marketing and the use of social media.

The consignment part of the business was particularly welcome.

Mrs Morris explained: “Homeowners and renters who wanted to downsize or relocate could consign their goods to a new home through us, make money and find cool and inexpensive ways to refresh their new spaces.”

That side of the business has continued to flourish, with consignors able to login to the OrangeBayCompany.com portal to see if their goods have been sold and what payments have been made to their bank account.

Many items that have not sold within 90 days are donated to charity. This fits with the company’s community-support ethics.

“Recycling, upcycling and buying local are very important elements of our philosophy that drive the consignment approach,” said Mrs Morris.

“Our belief in the power of community has led us to a business model that also incorporates giving back. Smaller home décor items which have expired are donated to the Second Hand Rose Thrift shop, whose earnings support the St George’s Foundation and the World Heritage Centre in the Old Towne.

“We also contribute goods to the Bermuda Housing Corporation and the Red Cross Upstairs Closet, as well as an annual cash donation each year to a deserving registered charity.

“We are so delighted to be able to live, work and create a business that demonstrates our philosophy while truly connecting to a community who shares our values.”

Orange Bay Company was initially located in an upper level warehouse space on Harvey Road, Paget, and sold furniture and home goods.

Mrs Morris said she had an interest in collecting vintage treasures long before the company was established, and many of those items are now used as staging within the store to add to the aesthetics and create conversation pieces for customers. The items include antique mirrors, church pews, 19th century sewing machines, luggage and vintage books.

The company was most recently located on Mills Creek Road, Pembroke, where it shared premises with lighting store ESC Limited. The larger space allowed Orange Bay Company to expand its range to include vintage and “gently-used high quality clothing and accessories”.

Mrs Morris said: “The space was lovely aesthetically, however it was structured so that our apparel department was in a completely different area and level of the building from our core business, the furniture and home goods department.”

Then, a few weeks ago, the company moved to its new location at Magnolia Place in Hamilton.

The relocating has been well received, with customers leaving praise and supportive comments on the company’s Facebook page.

Beyond its retail business, Orange Bay Company also offers home staging, where Mrs Morris’s eye for design, and her husband’s skills in carpenters, masonry and construction at sister company Green Island Restoration come into play.

“We reuse and reorient existing furniture where appropriate, and incorporate nearly-new pieces and accessories for companies, landlords, homeowners and rental agencies who want to create a fresh new, inviting space or repurpose a cluttered old room,” said Mrs Morris.

“It is clear that our community sees the value in breathing new life into quality goods and we’re passionate about making that happen.”

Looking back on the company’s first six years, Mrs Morris said the business had grown slowly but steadily, and in line with projections. She said the company had assembled “a crew of knowledgeable, well-trained team members that handle our customers service needs, curate the best selection of quality goods for our retail customers and whose hours are designed to equip them with a solid work-life balance which is important to us as an organisation”.

She added: “We are proud of our success.”
