Reid and Court Streets were full of activity yesterday lunch time with vendors, live music and al fresco social gathering places as part of the third annual Park(ing) Day event.

Organised through the Department of Planning and the Corporation of Hamilton there were numerous floral displays and vendor stalls including Ashley’s Lemonade, Souza’s Landscaping, Sweet Sak and the Hamilton Rotary Club.

The planning department also had a presence promoting the final week of the consultation period for the draft City of Hamilton Plan asking the public for comments.

Sheneve Campbell, a student at Bermuda College, was hosting an environmental quiz and wheel of fortune outside Phoenix Pharmacies on Reid Street.

She said: “I did it last year and it is fun. We are here to promote being green and protecting the environment. We have a wheel of fortune and depending on what number it lands on you get a question and you can win a prize. They include a lot of common knowledge that everyone should know — one is about invasive species such as lionfish and there are questions like ‘do you think it is mandatory to recycle?’.”

Barrett Dill of the Hamilton Rotary Club took the opportunity to hold a tag day. He said: “People have been very generous it has been a wonderful experience. We pride ourselves on getting back to the community so we do these tag days regularly. Our club membership is growing and this is part of our outreaching back in to the community.

“On a Friday afternoon it is normally busy but today it is extremely busy.”

The Department of Planning’s Julie Marshall said she was happy with the day and hopes for more participation in years to come. “What would be nice next year would be to see the whole length of the north side of lower Reid Street taken up with different displays, vendors and artists.”
