Camiko Smith takes the next step on his journey to playing golf at the highest level today.

The Bermuda golfer is in Portugal for the start of the European Tour Qualifying Tournament, where thousands of golfers will battle it out for the 25 Tour cards on offer.

Smith cannot wait to get out on the course, and said just being in the position to play in the event was “incredible”.

“It’s always exciting to be doing something I’ve always dreamed of doing since I was a kid, and to finally give it a go is so incredible and I’m extremely thankful for the opportunity,” he said.

Smith has been joined in his quest by William Tucker, who has travelled to Europe from Bermuda to caddy for him, and Smith said that having a friend alongside would give him a boost.

“I hadn’t planned on having a caddie, but having him [Tucker] there with me for the 72nd hole of qualifying will no doubt be a huge asset to my game, physically and mentally.”

Smith has been building up to this moment for the past several years, and stepped up his preparation over the summer when he played in several professional events in Canada.

A third-place finish at the Southern Ontario Open, and a fightback at a PGA Tour Canada qualifier has given him the belief that he can compete at the next level. Smith arrived in Portugal ten days ago and has been working on his game, and adjusting to the conditions at Ribagolfe Golf Club since then.

“The course is pretty long and narrow, a different feel to the North American courses I’ve played,” Smith said. “The course is a new build and all the hazards are strategically placed, I’ve put the work in and I’m looking forward to putting it into action.

“My game is feeling good, I’m working through any kinks as they arise but overall I’m happy with it. This week is going to be a good test of golf and I’m focused on staying patient, sticking to my routine, and trying to enjoy being here in Portugal.”
