Students to launch sailing initiative

Bermudian students are to carry out the official opening at the East End of the America’s Cup Endeavour Community Sailing Programme.

Almost 550 students from 9 to 12 will celebrate the October 15 launch of the St George’s programme, which offers sailing to young people who would not ordinarily have the opportunity.

The event, which starts at noon, includes the opening of the East Fort at the TS Admiral Somers Building and an Endeavour race on the RS Feva boats.

America’s Cup sailors will also race locals in traditional Bermuda fitted dinghies.

Along with St George’s mayor Quinell Francis, members of the Bermuda Government will attend.

Ms Francis said the presence of the first Endeavour fort in At George’s would go well with the East End’s rich maritime history.

The regatta can be viewed from Ordnance Island as well as the TS Admiral Somers Building, where the open house will continue until 6pm.
