Luck of the draw keeps Town’s bid on track

Dandy Town’s bid for a third successive Dudley Eve Trophy remains on track.

Along with Robin Hood, Town emerged as the lucky winners of yesterday’s drawing of lots to determine the group B winners and the runners-up.

“This is not an easy way to do anything,” Stephen Coddington, the Bermuda Football Association competitions committee chairman and former Cougars player, said.

Robin Hood, Dandy Town and Devonshire Cougars all finished locked in a three-way tie with matching goal difference, as well as the same number of goals scored and conceded, which resulted in the teams having to be separated by the drawing of lots.

Robin Hood were declared as group winners after they were the first team drawn, leaving Town and Cougars to sweat it out during the second and final pick.

Town ultimately got the luck of the draw, while Cougars were eliminated and left to ponder what might have been had captain Moses Steede converted a spot-kick in his team’s opening group fixture against Robin Hood.

“This is absolutely a big relief,” said Christie Morton, assistant treasurer of Western Stars Sports Club. “It’s not easy for all three teams but fortunately for us, double defending champions, we’re in, so we’re happy.”

Nadine Henry, the president of Devonshire Recreation Club, offered well wishes to the winners of the draw.

“Devonshire Recreation Club would like to wish both Dandy Town and Robin Hood all the best and we will be watching,” she said.

Now standing in the way of Town’s bid for a third successive Dudley Eve Trophy title are group A winners PHC Zebras, the last team to win the competition three times on the trot between the 1988-89 and 1990-91 seasons.

Town and Zebras will do battle in the second game of a Dudley Eve Trophy semi-final double header at Lords in St David’s on November 1.

Robin Hood, meanwhile, will face Somerset Trojans, runners-up in group A, in the remaining semi-final.

Kyle Lightbourne, the Robin Hood coach, was delighted to see his club advance to the last four of the competition.

“We’re obviously delighted that we didn’t go out of the tournament like that, but we feel for Devonshire Cougars,” Lightbourne said. “For us this is our first time in the competition and it would have been disappointing to go out like that.”

Meanwhile, league action continues tonight with Somerset Trojans, the Premier Division champions, hosting league newcomers Devonshire Colts at Somerset Cricket Club at 9pm.

Both teams are fresh off victories against Boulevard and Hamilton Parish respectively in their season openers.

Beforehand, Ireland Rangers host Flanagan’s Onions in a First Division encounter, which is scheduled to kick-off at 7pm.

With one eye on the approaching storm, Premier Division action is due to continue tomorrow with North Village Rams hosting Dandy Town at Bernard Park, PHC take on Robin Hood at PHC Field, Boulevard meet Southampton Rangers at Police Field, while Hamilton Parish take on Devonshire Cougars at Wellington Oval.

Tomorrow’s First Division has Young Men’s Social Club hosting St David’s at PHC Field, X-Roads at home to BAA at Garrison Field, Somerset Eagles doing battle with Paget at White Hill Field, while St George’s Colts will lock horns with Wolves at Wellington Oval.
