Smith falls at first hurdle in Tour card bid

Missed cut: Smith

Camiko Smith will have to wait at least another year to try and qualify for the European Tour.

The Bermuda golfer bowed out in the third round of the first stage of European Tour qualifiers at the Ribagolfe Golf Club in Lisbon yesterday.

Smith shot a two-over-par 74, which left him with a 54-hole total of 224, four shots shy of where he needed to be in order to progress to the final round to keep his qualification bid on track.

“The cut was plus four and unfortunately I wasn’t able to qualify,” Smith said.

Only those players within seven shots of the qualifying place advanced to the final round after 54 holes.

Smith entered yesterday’s round with very little margin for error and ultimately proved unequal to the task.

He made a steady start before making bogeys at the par four 4th and 9th holes to make the turn two shots over par for the round and eight over for the tournament.

Smith coped slightly better on the back nine which he played at even par with birdies at the par five, 12th and par four, 18th offsetting bogeys at the par four, 10th and par five, 15th.

The local player has put a lot into improving his game with his coach Fred Griffin at Grand Cypress Golf Academy in the hope of qualifying for a lucrative tour.

He has also been working with Doctor Bernie Jensen, a sports psychologist, at the University of Central Florida to help raise his confidence.

Smith gave a reminder of the potential he possesses after making it through to sectional qualifying of the US Open qualifiers for the second time in succession.

Meanwhile, after 54 holes in Lisbon Linus Gillgreen, of Sweden, led second-placed compatriot and previous leader Peter Bocain by a single shot.

Gillgreen fired a five-under-par 67, the lowest round yesterday, to go to 13-under-par 203 for the tournament.
