Cellular providers working to restore services

Digicel Bermuda announced it has restored 100 per cent of its network services following the impact of Hurricane Joaquin.

The service provider reported that while most of its network remained online throughout the hurricane, those affected by the storm were back on track at 4.47pm.

Meanwhile according to CellOne’s Facebook page more than 80 per cent of its network was up as of 9am this morning, with the majority of remaining issues cell site power related. At about 7pm, only the Khyber Pass area of Warwick remained out of action.

Following a full network assessment early this morning, Digicel confirmed that all parts of the Island should now be benefiting from stable cellular coverage with the exception of a limited area between Port Royal and Barnes Corner in Southampton where issues may persist.

Digicel engineers were out early this morning assessing and restoring damage, with Dockyard and Somerset brought back online within a few hours.

As they continue to restore the few remaining issues, clients can expect full network operations by the end of today.

For fixed line business and home internet customers, Digicel currently sees no issues across their networks that will cause services to fail. However, the company recognises that some customers will still face problems due to power outages and where local loop providers have not fully recovered their services.

Digicel has said that anyone affected by loss of home internet can use a smartphone to create a local “data hot spot”. For help with this or any other mobile or internet queries, customers are advised to call 500-5000.

Robin Seale, CEO of Digicel Bermuda, said: “I could not be more grateful to, nor proud of, the teams for getting services back to the levels our customers count on at extraordinary speed.

“We thank all of our customers for bearing with us while this was achieved and appreciate the feedback received from many who recognised our efforts to keep Bermuda online.”

Due to increased demand on the network after a national emergency, it is typical for the quality of services to degrade. This is usually characterised by dropped calls and slow data speeds.

Customers should also be advised that the TBI administrative offices in Hamilton will be closed today. Its technical operations centre will continue its 24-hour service.
