Documentary on attempted mountain ascent

High ambition: a film on the Meru expedition in Northern India will be screened on Sunday

An award-winning documentary by high-profile Bermuda visitor, extreme sportsman Jimmy Chin, is to screen on the Island.

Meru, which won the audience choice award in the United States documentary category at January’s Sundance Film Festival, is to screen at 3pm on Sunday in the Tradewinds Auditorium of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.

It tells the story of the attempted ascent of the 21,000-foot Shark’s Fin on Mount Meru in Northern India.

Renowned alpinists Conrad Anker, Renan Ozturk and Mr Chin attempt to become the first climbers to ever reach the summit in an expedition through nature’s harshest elements.

Mr Chin co-directed the film with his wife, award-winning director and producer Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi.

Mr Chin visited Bermuda earlier this year for a feature that was published in the Summer issue of Conde Nast Traveler magazine.

Bermudian photographer Gavin Howarth shot Mr Chin taking part in a variety of adventure activities on the Island.

The other film on the Weekend Film Series double bill on Sunday, October 11, dramatic comedy The New Girlfriend starring French heartthrob Romain Duris, will screen at 5.15pm.

Tickets to both films are on sale now at the Oceans Gift Shop, BUEI, or by calling 294-0204. Trailers can be viewed at www.bermudadocs.com.
