Almost 200 families attend school fair

The International Schools Fair at the Fairmont Southampton was attended by nearly 200 families

Close to 200 families attended Bermuda’s International School Fair — the biggest of its kind held on the Island.

The event, at the Fairmont Southampton and organised by Tory Dodge of Schools To Know, invited some 95 schools from America, Britain and Canada to share information about their services with parents and students.

Ms Dodge, who founded the fair, is a consultant who has helped a large number of Bermuda students to find places at boarding schools. She teamed up with educational consultant Niall Browne to organise the event,

Speaking from the fair, Mr Browne, the senior educational consultant for BvS Education, told The Royal Gazette: “We are very pleased with the turn out so far.

“The American schools have been coming for about 25 years through my colleague Tory and about three years ago we brought the British and Canadian schools over as well for the first time and it really has grown. Looking in the ballroom tonight it is very full.

“Over the years, the event has become more professional to reflect the product being sold.”

Asked about the feedback he had received from parents and students, Mr Browne added: “They love the fact that there are people from the schools here that they are able to talk to.

“They tend to be given recommendations of schools from their friends which is good but what they love is being able to sit down and speak to those schools and learn more about them and see if it is the right fit for their child as well.

“This has allowed them to focus their minds on the schools they had already thought of and give them some other schools they hadn’t previously thought of. Some parents had said they would go to visit some of the schools that they hadn’t known about.”

British Airways partnered on last month’s event and will give Bermuda pupils who are going to travel to school in the UK special fairs and special luggage allowance.
