Bascome faces tough challenge in next fight

Nikki Bascome, the undefeated Bermuda boxer, will return to the ring against Mexican Pilo Reyes in a main event bout at The Fairmont Southampton on Saturday, November 7.

Bascome, who is undefeated in two professional fights, and Reyes, who also has an unblemished record after three bouts, will go toe-to-toe in a four-round welterweight encounter.

“Mexicans are usually pretty good at the lighter division so the fight is going to be exciting,” an event spokesman said.

“We could have gone softer but we want to start challenging Nikki a little bit more and we picked this guy [Reyes] who is 3-0 so he’s skilled. Obviously we want to grow Nikki but we also need to make sure that he is learning every time he gets into the ring.”

In his previous bout, Bascome defeated Claudele Duprier, the American, via a third-round knockout.

That bout, however, was not sanctioned by Oscar Lightbourne, the Bermuda’s acting boxing commissioner, because Duprier did not make the required weight.

In Bascome’s previous bout at the Fairmont Southampton Princess last November, he triumphed over Canadian Kru Joe Marchand-Tipping with a unanimous points victory on the undercard of Teresa Perozzi’s loss to American Kali Reiss for the vacant IBA world middleweight title.

The undercard of the November 7 event will feature three Bermuda heavyweights Corey Boyce, Shannon Ford and Stefan Dill.

Boyce, the Robin Hood defender, will take on a Canadian opponent yet to be announced, while Ford and Dill will face each other.

At least seven bouts are expected to included on the undercard.
