I was embarrassed to be a Bermudian
Dear Sir,
Yesterday (October 7) I took my houseguests touring around Bermuda. As it is their first visit we decided to go to Horseshoe Bay. Travelling along South Road my missus and I were shocked at how unkept the hedges and grass verges were. Hedges spilling into the road, cane grass growing several feet high. The whole Island looked as if it had not had the Works and Engineering staff or the parks staff paying attention to it.
I do recall a recent hurricane but the overgrown foliage in evidence obviously had not been trimmed in weeks. What are our public staff members doing with their time at work? We pay extremely high taxes. Are we getting our money’s worth from those who benefit from our sacrifices?
Back to what made me write. We turned down the hill to go to Horseshoe Beach. Leaves and trash strewn all over the place. Minibuses and other vehicles were bringing hundreds from the Norwegian Breakaway to our “jewel”. What did they think as they surely viewed the lack of maintenance of our No 1 tourist attraction. I thought to myself, what does the “Botanical Gardens” look like at this time?
I was embarrassed to be a Bermudian. We have sunk to such depths, we must no longer care what our beautiful Island has become. Weeds, overhanging trees in the roads and generally just a mess. Is this the way Bermuda is going to look going forward?
If it is, we must look seriously at finding a better way to get our Island back.
We pay too much to accept what we are getting. To those responsible, as my granny used to say, “get the rag out”.
We deserve better.
PAYING TOO MUCH
FOR TOO LITTLE
PS How long is it going to take to build the wall east of the old White’s grocery?
