Shipping community pulls together

The Island’s shipping community came to the fore in the wake of Hurricane Joaquin to ensure vital infrastructure for the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Bermuda was delivered.

The Oleander, which was loaded up with 43 40ft containers for next week’s event, came in from New York behind the storm and arrived in Hamilton on Monday evening.

The cargo included AC45F catamarans and other racing equipment for the teams as well as a mobile TV Studio for ACTV — the production company that will be broadcasting the event.

After the container ship arrived a team from Stevedoring Services worked until midnight offloading more that 200 containers before returning to work at 8am to finish the offload.

“By all accounts the shipment and offload went really smoothly,” said Mike Winfield, CEO of the ACBDA.

“I think it’s a great example of how Bermuda comes together when the chips are down and delivers.

“We would like to sincerely thank all those involved for their extraordinary efforts.”

Stevedoring Services and the Oleander crew adjusted their schedule to assist with the America’s Cup last April when the ship made a historic offload in Dockyard with the infrastructure of the Oracle Team USA base.
