Bermuda’s hotel taxes are too high

Extra expense: a reader says he paid $441 more than he budgeted for during his vacation due to hidden taxes

Dear Sir,

I just returned from my 51st Bermuda vacation. Another winner. Hurricane Joaquin was a special treat. Great hotel as usual.

When I looked at the bill I became a bit annoyed. I was quoted an excellent rate, which I was very satisfied with.

Upon reading the final bill, there were extra charges for government tax, which I expected, and service charges, but the charges for tourism authority fee and resort levy?

Are they kidding? Isn’t 7.25 per cent enough to add to an already expensive bill? Not to mention the hidden departure tax. My friend here in New York asked me how much I paid per night. I had to add an extra $63 per night to my originally quoted price, and for seven nights.

That’s $441 more than I originally budgeted for my vacation. I will consider this the next time I decide to visit Bermuda.
