A short film written and directed by a Bermudian and starring another has earned international attention.

‘Pleasure is Following Your Heart’ has been highlighted by Magnum Vie Magnifique, a competition in which independent film-makers are invited to submit ideas for short movies about “personal pleasure, indulgence and the joy of letting go”.

The film was written by Kara Smith, who also directed, while Jason Eddy was cast as “Fisherman”, a working man who returns home to find his one true love with another man.

As of yesterday afternoon, the film had been watched more than 90,000 times on YouTube.

Ms Smith is no stranger to film — her short film ‘Blotter’ screened at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, while Mr Eddy has received rave reviews for his theatrical performances in Europe.

Mr Eddy joked that a little nepotism was in play in his casting — Ms Smith is his cousin.

“We grew up together and also went to school together,” he said. “She now lives in London as I do and we have wanted to work together for a while now.

“She wrote the part of the fisherman for me, which is rather great. So there wasn’t an audition, just a phone call to tell me that the script was one of the winners and that the film was going ahead.

“I am really thrilled with the final product. I thought the script was fantastic — Kara has a wonderful talent for storytelling.

“Considering we had a very tight shoot of two days for a quite ambitious short film, I am really impressed with the look of the film and how the story comes together. We had a great team of actors, production team and crew, so it was a great project to be involved in.”

Mr Eddy is scheduled to start rehearsals this week to play the Beast in a production of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ at the Polka Theatre in London, something he is quite excited about.

He also said he was looking forward to the release of his film ‘Forgotten Man’, in which he appears as an actor.
